WFMU's Free Music Archive...FMA For Ya!

"The Free Music Archive is an interactive library of high-quality, legal audio downloads. The Free Music Archive is being directed by WFMU, the most renowned freeform radio station in America. Radio has always offered the public free access to new music. The Free Music Archive is a continuation of that purpose, designed for the age of the internet. Every mp3 you discover on The Free Music Archive is pre-cleared for certain types of uses that would otherwise be prohibited by outdated copyright law. Are you a podcaster looking for pod-safe audio? A radio or video producer searching for instrumental bed music that won't put your audience to sleep? A remix artist looking for pre-cleared samples? Or are you simply looking for some new sounds to add to your next playlist? The Free Music Archive is a resource for all that and more, and unlike other websites, all of the audio has been hand-picked by established audio curators. The Free Music Archive is a platform for collaboration between WFMU and a group of fellow curators, including KEXP, dublab, KBOO, ISSUE Project Room, and CASH Music. The site combines the curatorial approach that these organizations have played for the last few decades, with the community generated approach of many current online music sites. Inspired by Creative Commons and the open source software movement, the FMA provides a legal and technological framework for curators, artists, and listeners to harness the potential of music sharing. Every artist page will have a bio and links to the artists’ home page for users to learn more about the music they discover via the Free Music Archive. We also seek to compensate artists directly. Artist, album and song profiles will contain links to buy the full album from the artist and/or label’s preferred vendor(s). Users can also “tip” an artist if they like what they hear, sending a donation directly to the artists’ PayPal account. Artist profiles include tourdates, encouraging users to step away from the glowing computer screen and see some real live music. While the Free Music Archive is free and open to anyone regardless of registration or other requirements, written and audio content is curated, and permission to upload/edit content is granted on an invitation basis. To read more about user types, please see Types of Users below. To request additional member privilidges, please see our Contact page..."

4AD Money machine in action...

Text by Spine.com: For $175 fans can pick up a Deluxe Edition of the boxset, which comes complete with the Pixies' five studio albums -- 1987's Come On Pilgrim EP, 1988's Surfer Rosa, 1989's Doolittle, 1990's Bossanova, and 1991's Trompe le Monde. It also features a DVD of the band's music videos and their 1991 performance at London's Brixton Academy, a 54-page picture book, and redesigned album covers by the Pixies' original designer, Vaughan Oliver. For $425 (yikes!) hardcore disciples get a little more: the Limited Edition version of Minotaur, which includes added goodies: 180-gram vinyl versions of each album, a print of Oliver's artwork, and a 72-page hardcover book. "Because the Pixies remain such a contemporary band and their sound is still so relevant today, we wanted to re-introduce them to their fans, giving them something that they would truly appreciate and cherish," said Jeff Anderson, founder of A+R (Artist in Residence), who also put together box set releases for Nine Inch Nails, Beck, and Sigur Ros. "We're not inexpensive, but I think there are still people out there who don't mind paying for great quality." While you decide whether you're one of those people, listen to "Fate to Fatal," the title track off the latest release from bassist Kim Deal's side-project the Breeders. Best part: It's free. The Pixies will headline the Isle of Wight festival in the UK June 14.

One Turkish Delight + One Jasper TX...

ANDUIN & JASPER TX
The Bending of Light

A classic case of a collaboration adding up to more than the sum of its parts, this incredible album arrived here with a fair amount of expectation but duly proceeded to completely blow us away with its utterly immersive blend of shimmering drones and densely crafted, submerged melodies. The SMTG label has already impressed us a great deal with a pristine lineup of releases from all manner of artists we love, but "The Bending of Light" must surely rank as the best thing on the label yet. Many of you will no doubt already be familiar with the work of both Jasper TX and Anduin, but despite the high calibre of material from both camps they seem to have struck something entirely more developed and engrossing working together. Opening track "A Beam of Light Bends Back Upon Itself" is interesting enough with its slow-building drone haze, but its when second track "Producing Great jets of Radiation" hits that you realise that you're in the presence of something truly important and great. It's a track that nervously builds from the low registers with a Deathprod style dose of uncertainty and darkness slowly overcome by strained beams of light and distortion, like Tim Hecker manipulating a church organ - but before you get a chance to register the full scope of frequencies the track fades out to an abrupt end. "Where a Star Once Was" is another highlight, a creaking, pulsating recording doused with unusual, nautical found sounds and barely audible keys shifting into focus with one half embracing melody and the other engulfed by the icy tundras you'd more readily associate with someone like Mika Vainio. It's dark, dense, overwhelming music. "Like The Foot Prints.." takes an engrossing diversion and clears aural mists for a much more vulnerable kind of music, a slow pulsating heartbeat and immensely beautiful notes riding underneath a humming, delicately balanced drone and restrained strums, sounding not unlike classic Pan American but with a more pregnant emotional core. The album ends with "Walking in the Snow", a monochrome rendition that barely manages to contain the warm embers of memory and nostalgia underneath, so much so that you can imagine it bookending a lost vintage era recording from the Cocteau Twins, high praise indeed.

HANNU
Hintergarten

Another unmissable album of crackly, homespun electronica from Helsinki's Hannu, once again released via the Kesh imprint. Hintergarten twinkles into life with the sound of worn-out, lo-fi glockenspiel recordings rubbing up against strings and muffled bass samples. In fact, opening track 'Pop' serves as an excellent refresher course in what makes Hannu's music so distinctive and alluring: the sweetest of melodies seem to collide in a manner that isn't quite fully in tune or in time, sounding all the more lovable for their rundown, loose-fitting weariness. The album's sound palette is garnished with overspills of vinyl noise, cassette hiss and the various other side-effects of using battered old recordings for source material. On 'Theme For Grant' you might hear some parallels with something like Four Tet's 'She Moves She', carving mismatching string instruments into sparkling spliced together riffs set against a backdrop of shuffling beats - Hannu's music does sound as if it was made a good century or so before Kieren Hebden was even born though. For all the other records it might bring to mind (the music of Colleen and certain members of the Fonal camp offering particularly strong parallels) Hintergarten is unique for the continuous state of winter it plunges the listener into; from the album artwork to the frosted charms of tracks like 'Kimallus' and 'Unenvieja', Hannu evokes a veritable musical Narnia. Various Production, Trycycle EP, A Killer Track...

http://www.myspace.com/various - Ever the mysterious musical chameleons, Various Production, follow up their brave experiment with Scottish spoken word artist Gerry Mitchell, 'The Invisibale Lodger', with the ‘Trycycle EP’, marking a shift away from bold genre conglomerates and into heavily synthesizer led dubstep that has all the hallmarks of Gemmy and Rustie combined. The title track chops and swirls its melody manically around a genuinely tough steppah beat whilst the b side, ‘B side’, takes more of a spacious hip hop flow with its drum programming, the melody stemming from a vocal snippet that’s repeatedly stabbed into the foreground of the mix. But the real peach of the three tracks on offer here is ‘Ramp’, which unlike the previous tracks doesn’t feel like its trying to emulate a style such as Joker’s or Rustie’s. It’s a clipped and skewed sparse instrumental that gets slayed by the relaxed vocal bars from emcee V.E.X., a man who hides a few championship winning punch lines in his verses buffing up the end product and making it pop off like how you wish that last Virus Syndicate LP would have...

Patrick Canning - 'Sex Lives of the Paralyzed'

<a href="http://patrickcanning.bandcamp.com/album/sex-lives-of-the-paralyzed">Flower Printed Linen by Patrick Canning</a>

"The complexities and pointlessness of sexual relations and the confronting of inevitable physical and mental decline are the two main themes of this album. Dealing with depression and sexual frustration are the two biggest complications I dealt with during the production of this record. Right now I am tired, as I have been through most of this year. Here is an allegorical approximation of my thematic attempts presented as a chapter of the Kama Sutra translated from Hindu to English to Japanese back to English using free translation software..."
