The Weird Weeds Are...From Austin TX...& They'v Got This New Free EP For D L.
“This is Not What You Want.” Is the title ironic? Or is it possibly more a commentary on the Weird Weeds’ place in the musical underground? Maybe it’s just a line from one of the songs? The Austin trio might do better on either coast, as odd arty pop tends to find more willing ears in the blue states, but at the same time they score all the best opening slots when the weirdo rock acts hit Austin; so why change a good thing if it ain’t broke?
I think “This is Not What You Want” is actually what we all want—a shimmering, soft bed of hazy acoustic guitars, heartfelt vocal harmonies and strangely affecting tunes that may pass by in an instant (the 5 song EP is just over 13 minutes) but linger in the soft air for a good while afterwards. It’s a leap forward from the promising fractured strangeness of their debut, “Hold Me” (Digitalis), mining the same gentle strum with slight effects as parts of Jim O’Rourke’s mid-late 90s albums. It’s not necessarily psychedelic, not necessarily “free folk”, yet fans of all the above should mosey their clickers over to Sounds Are Active and download this blissful (and free, as in costs nothing!) gem as soon as possible. Everyone else should, too.
